We know Back To School season is upon us and we want to make it that little bit easier for you and your children to start the new school year by reminding you of some essentials that might have missed your checklist. It’s easy to get swept up with what others are doing at the start of a new school year or become overwhelmed and forget priorities at such a busy time. We’ve made sure to outline some key tasks below to get you on the right track. You might find that your essentials are different to the ones listed in this blog. That’s totally fine! These are just some pointers to get you started.
-
Check in with your child
This might not seem like your typical essential, but taking care of your child’s mind is just as important as taking care of their physical body. The thought of going back to school can be stressful for some children, so checking in on their wellbeing before school and seeing how they’re feeling can make them feel heard and will also ease any back to school anxiety after some reassurance. They may be scared about being in a new class or having a new teacher, but taking the time to console and chat with them means you can comfort them and gauge their feelings. You can also remind them of the exciting things that have to come, such as new friends and classmates. You can also remind them of how fun it will be to come home after a long school day and be able to relax in their home and spend time with their family.
-
Shop for new shoes
Whether these are handed down in good condition or bought brand new, having a new smart pair of shoes for school is a necessity. Children grow so quickly in a short space of time, that you’ll probably find that last year’s shoes don’t fit anymore! Even if they do, they might not be in the best condition to start a new school year so finding a new pair is a great way to keep your child comfortable whilst supporting their growth. If you’re looking for some more budget-friendly shoes, you can always use a second-hand app like Vinted which has plenty of new and used shoes available for a discounted price.
-
Get their haircut
Although this one isn’t necessarily essential, it’s important to look smart for school or college and a handy way to make sure your child looks ready for school could be to tame that mane! After the fun of the summer holidays it might be hard to go back to school but getting a new look can help to get your child excited and confident about returning to the classroom and also remind them that school is a place to look smart. Lots of hairdressers or barbers offer a cheaper rate for children’s haircuts and sometimes give a discount if multiple children’s hair is cut on the same day.
-
Uniform and PE Kit
This again, might not be essential if your child still fits into their uniform from the year before and it’s in decent condition, but we know this isn’t often the case! Depending on what year your child is going into or if they’re going to a new school, they might need a new uniform. Even if your child is staying in the same school, as with school shoes, you might find that your child has outgrown a lot of the uniforms they once wore. That’s why it might be wise to ask your child to try their school uniform from last year and see what condition it’s in and if it still fits. If you do find they need a new uniform or PE kit, then there are places that you can buy these for slightly cheaper. Again, Vinted is fantastic for new and used uniforms in good condition and also Asda does cheap children’s uniforms. You could even grab some hand-me-downs from family members or older siblings.

Lunch ideas and lunch box
This will only apply to you if your child has a packed lunch, but considering some new recipes for your child’s lunch will be bound to increase their excitement for back to school. Giving them new flavours and dishes or even trying new sandwich fillings can be great to start the year with a bang. It’s important to grow their palettes by exploring new food and trying some of these fantastic and easy back-to-school packed lunch ideas could be the best way to do that. These are even better if you’re on a budget! Depending on your budget, it might be a nice idea to consider getting a new packed lunch box or water bottle, as these can become worn over the time at school and are usually a hive for germs.
