Autism and Public Health – Autism is a complex neurological condition that affects one in every 59 children in the United States. It is a life-long condition that can cause significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges. Autistic individuals often require specialized medical and psychological care, as well as support from family, friends, and the community. It is important that those with a master’s or BS public health recognize that autism is not a single condition, but a spectrum of disorders with a wide range of abilities and needs, and that each autistic person is unique.
Despite the prevalence of autism in the United States, there is still a lack of awareness and understanding of the condition. This lack of understanding often leads to misdiagnosis, inadequate care, and exclusion from the community. It is vital that the public health community address this issue, in order to ensure that autistic people receive the care and support they need.
Awareness and Acceptance
The first step in improving public health for autistic people is raising awareness and, just as importantly, increasing acceptance. This can be done through public health campaigns, educational programs, and media campaigns. Additionally, it is important to ensure that the public health system is adequately equipped to provide care for autistic people. This means ensuring that healthcare professionals are educated about autism and its symptoms and that they are adequately trained to provide effective treatment.
Autistic Representation
Another important aspect of public health for autistic people is representation. It is important that autistic individuals are represented in the media, in educational programs, and in public policy. This will help to reduce stigma and increase understanding of the condition. Representation ranges from seemingly minor examples, like Bruno Thomas and Friends, an autistic character that lets autistic children see themselves in the media, to autistic role models in professional settings.
Childhood Supports
It is a sad but true reality that autistic children often don’t get the support they need to grow into healthy and successful adults. This is especially true for those who are diagnosed later in life, as they often do not have access to the same types of services and support that those who are diagnosed earlier in life have. This can leave them feeling isolated and without a support system, which can lead to a number of issues such as poor mental health, difficulty finding and holding down jobs, housing insecurity, and other challenges.
Adult Supports
The biggest issue with this lack of support is that it often leaves autistic adults feeling like they are not seen, heard, or understood by society. This can lead to a number of issues such as low self-esteem, difficulty fitting in, and an overall feeling of loneliness and isolation. This can have a long-lasting impact on a person, as it can lead to depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.
It is also important to note that autistic adults often face a number of unique challenges that can be difficult to navigate without the right support. For example, many autistic adults struggle with communication and social interaction, which can make it difficult to build relationships or find meaningful work. This lack of support can also make it difficult to access certain services, such as housing, mental health care, or job training.
Support and Inclusion
Finally, it is important to ensure that autistic people are included in the community. This means creating an environment where autistic individuals are accepted and valued, and where they are given equal opportunities to participate in social activities and to be a part of the community. This can be done through inclusive education, recreational activities, and employment opportunities.
Improving public health for autistic individuals is essential to ensuring that they receive the care and support they need. It is important to recognize that autism is a complex condition and that each person is unique in their abilities and needs. By raising awareness, improving access to services and resources, and including autistic people in the community, we can ensure that those affected by autism receive the care and support they need to lead fulfilling lives.
