What’s My Baby Thinking? by Tanith Carey and Dr Angharad Rudkin is a practical child psychology guide for parents, published on November 6 2025 by DK.
Oh my goodness babies can be so hard to fathom can’t they? They don’t have speech to tell you what they want and need and they can seem entirely incomprehensible as a result. And they can’t exactly jump to their feet and SHOW you what they want either. Being unable to know what your baby needs when you are tired and hormonal can be so frustrating for both you and your baby and can affect both your bonding and the specialness of these precious times.
This book seeks to help you understand what your baby might be thinking form a neurological and developmental perspective. It is a research led book that looks at 75 everyday scenarios form newborn to two years old and provides both insight and understanding as well as great tips on how to respond to ease your babies frustrations and strengthen your bond.
It is fully illustrated and a really easy to use guide.

Oh, I would have loved this book when my two were small.
It covers issues such as sleep and smiling, saying no, and separation to help you provide supportive and loving parenting that meets your babies needs.

About the authors
I am a huge fan of Tanith’s books and have probably read them all.
Do check out her backlist from Taming the Tiger Parent to The Friendship Maze and so many more they are all grounded in both science and research as well as wisdom. Tanith is a counsellor and well respected writer and she makes a lot of sense!
Dr Rudkin is a clinical psychologist and consultant with a wealth of experience working with families.
Together they produced the book What’s my Child Thinking which is astoundingly useful. I would dare to say this is even better. Understanding our pre-verbal babies is exactly to he tool a new parent needs. A perfect gift for parents, carers and grandparents of tiny ones!
